Events

Welcome to the Royal Bean ‘Events’ blog.

Here you‘ll find all the events we have at the Royal Bean.  We’re a great place to enjoy music performed live, view artwork, hear poetry, and whatever attention-grabbing, thought-provoking, eye-catching, and stimulating events that I can fit into my little big coffee shop.  I update this often, so read below for details about live music and other events we have at the Bean.

On the first Thursday of each month is our ‘Open Mic’ Poetry night.

“Night on the Town” meets at the Royal Bean on the 4th Friday of each month for “coffee, conversation, and board games between 9PM until 11PM.”

Live music is scheduled for each Saturday between 8 and 10 P M.   Please check our calendar on the right hand side for details.  As always, our live musical performances are free.

Performing Live and for free this Saturday, May 19th, 2012:

Meade Skelton is a Singer Songwriter from Richmond, Virginia who started playing piano and singing at an early age. Since then, he has enjoyed some success in the Virginia music scene and beyond, with his country piano driven melodies, and his heartache meets humor style. Singing songs about life in Richmond, sweet tea, hipsters, lost love, and weight problems, there’s always honesty in Meade’s songs, as he writes all about what he knows and loves. Bringing his 88 keys of sweet goodness, Meade has been dubbed Richmond’s own “piano playin’ cowboy”, and has range, switching from love ballads to uptempo rockabilly and western swing numbers. Enjoy some Meade with your coffee! mead-skelton

Performing live Saturday, April 21st from 8p.m until 10p.m will be the very talented “ilyAIMY”.  Check out their music right here:  http://www.ilyaimy.com/ .  Here’s part of their bio from their blog so that you can get to know them better:

ilyaimy

“Since 2001, Rob Hinkal (guitar, vocals) and Heather Lloyd (guitar, vocals, djembe) have fronted Baltimore-based ilyAIMY (i love you And I Miss You). Capping off their decade-long musical partnership with a year of honors from the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance, the National Association for Campus Activities and the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest, they’ve played everything from bait shops, to biker festivals, to clothing-optional resorts. It’s agreed: “all they need is two acoustic guitars and a djembe” to sound as full as rock band, “but they also engage their audiences with humor and write award-winning folk songs”. They have supported the likes of Dar Williams, Ellis Paul and The Gym Class Heroes.

The sound:
Heather’s incredible voice and Rob’s percussive acoustic guitar are what it’s all about. References to folk, rock, Americana and alternative, with lush male/female harmony and tribal percussion. Called “a welcome jolt in … folk” and “an acoustically roiling, combustible attack on the usual singer/songwriter fare” by reviewers, they have been compared to everything from Buckingham/Nicks to Ani DiFranco to an acoustic Tool to Rusted Root.

The last couple years have been ilyAIMY’s most exciting ever. Heather returned from backing Dar WilliamsPromised Land Tour to release ilyAIMY’s most recent studio album, “A Gift For Saint Cecilia,” and her own solo CD, “Samples.” Pat Wictor of folk supergroup Brother Sun sums it all up:

“ilyAIMY ain’t your grandpa’s folk music – and thank goodness. They are fearless writers and performers. Heather Lloyd’s voice is enough for me. Voices this rich and emotionally hard-hitting – equal parts velvet darkness, barely contained heartbreak, and hard-won, unstoppable joy – don’t come around often. Sing me the phone book, Heather Lloyd – I’ll ask for an encore.”
Ok guys!  What do you say?  I think it’s worth the trip to go to the Royal Bean so listen to some incredible music, enjoy a hot or iced latte, fruit smoothie, or anything form our delicious menu, and just have some fun!  Oh yeah, go to their website for Youtube videos and the sounds of their music, and more.

Performed Live on Saturday, February 18th, 2012 starting at 8pm until 10pm will be Scott Tierman and Shannah Hoar

Scott T. (Tiernan)…

has been writing uplifting, fun, optimistic songs since he was 14. His music consistently reflects his positive attitude and outgoing demeanor. He incorporates a variety of styles and sounds into his sets and plays guitar, ukulele and keyboard while performing.  Tiernan wears his heart on his sleeve, and his songs completely represent just that. His music is filled with passion and love for the world, the people in it, and the God that he adores. Tiernan  doesn’t believe in making music just for the sake of making music.  He writes with the knowledge that songs have the profound ability to positively change the lives of those who truly listen. While his style is poppy and airy, one dedicated listen will show just how dense his music is with depth and meaning. After finishing up his third album, hippies, Lovers, Lawyers & Fools,” last spring, Tiernan has been playing consistently; around his base city, Charlottesville, VA and across the Mid-Atlantic region. The album has garnered Tiernan a lot of positive press. Brad Savage, voice of the popular Charlottesville indie rock station, 106.1 The Corner, summed up the album well calling it, fun, and really catchy.

Shanna Hoar:

If you walk out of one of her shows happier than when you came in,   Shanna Hoar did her job. This charismatic, young songwriter writes inspiring folk/pop tunes and can effortlessly lift your spirits and  put on an entertaining show.

Shanna grew up in northern Virginia, attended University of  Virginia, and then emerged as one of Charlottesville’s newest  talents, coming onto the music scene in March 2011. With her clever   wordplay and quirky style, Shanna has quickly garnered a large  following in the Central Virginia area.

There’s not many subjects that are taboo for Shanna. She’ll sing about anything from falling for the bad boy to eating ungodly  amounts of Chipotle to pirate love tragedies. In addition to being undeniably charming and fun, there’s a breadth of soul and profundity in her songs that truly show off her lyrical and musical   range. The release of her upcoming debut EP will showcase her  limitless abilities.

At a Shanna Hoar show, you will find yourself laughing. You may find  yourself crying. You are likely to relive beautiful memories of the  past, but one thing is certain, you will undoubtedly leave with a smile on your face.

Bio: With a background in percussion, piano, guitar and classical voice, Gary is an independent musician frustrated with the low quality and decaying morality of popular music. A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Gary is a seasoned professional, having played and collaborated with many local artists and toured the country spreading his passion for music, most notably while drumming for the folk rock/hip hop/reggae soul band Bus, alongside now Avett Brothers member Joe Kwon. His originals blend melodic elements of rock/blues with the groove centered feel of soul and funk, together with thoughtful inspirational lyrics, into a style all his own. Along with hard hitting originals, Gary wields an ocean of covers from contemporary and classic artist, honing his craft in everything from coffee shops and bars, to private parties and corporate events. You can catch Gary performing regularly at the Streets of Southpoint Mall in Durham, NC.

Live Music this Saturday, December, 3rth from 8 until 10 PM

ere ye here ye,

Citizens of the Royal Bean kingdom gather around.  This Saturday, December the 3rd between 8 and 10 PM we’re having live music.

Brooks and Jones

Sarah Brooks and Kevin Jones have come together as musical partners to arrange and play great jazz standards from Gershwin, Porter, Ellington and more. A blend of piano, vocals, trumpet and bass bring a pleasing variety to their repertoire.

Sarah Brooks is a piano teacher in Raleigh who has been playing for 35 years and is classically trained in music. While Gershwin has been a long-time favorite – she played “Rhapsody in Blue” with orchestra for her senior recital in college – it wasn’t until recently that she began to learn how to play the more free style of jazz. Now she enjoys collaborating with Kevin Jones, a Chatham County journeyman musician and teacher.  Kevin is fond of saying,  ”Jazz music reminds me of  life:  often sweet, always spicy, and never do all the dissonant elements get completely resolved.  If Jazz were a woman she’d be complicatedly luscious.”  Jones has a Master’s degree in music composition and fancies himself a philosopher.

Live music this Saturday, 11-12-11 from 8 until 10pm

Genres: Singer Songwriter / Folk / Indie Rock

Artist Bio

Amy Alley grew up in a little southern town west of
Charlotte NC amidst an interesting blend of transplants brought there by Charlotte’s banking merger boom. Growing up surrounded by a diversity of people
from larger cities around the world gave a broader world view to Amy’s  traditional southern background. She was introduced to the music of less  traditional artists like Ani Difranco and Melissa Ferrick, which added new
depth to her more conventional southern background of bluegrass and singers  like Iris Dement, Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin. The result for Amy is a  novel style of music that combines the influence of her hearty, spirited mountain  folk roots along with a raw, unconventional approach to the folk genre.

Live Music Saturday, September 24th, 2011. Performing live will be Greyson Havens-Morris

Greyson Havens-Morris is a singer/songwriter from Chicago, IL trying something a little… différent.

A couple of years ago, a French professor at his former college suggested an entire show “en Francais”. Six months later the Dean of the College presented Havens-Morris with the 2010 “Outstanding Contributor to Cross Cultural Awareness” award for a fundraiser in which him and several other students performed French standards such as <<Aux Champs-Elysées>> <<Belleville Rendez-Vous>> and <<La Vie En Rose>> to aid students with travel expenses to the annual VCU French Film Festival at Richmond.

Ever since then he has turned American audiences on to the eclectic sounds of French music dating back to the 1940s – the present. But, listen closely, not all of it is entirely foreign. Havens-Morris loves to put a French twist on popular American and English tunes as well!

Like we said, it’s a little “différent” but worth coming down to the café this Saturday night (Sept. 24th) for a lovely evening! -Greyson Havens-Morris

Live Performances for the month of February:

Neil Gribbs will be performing live on February 26th, 2011

Short Bio:
“Neil Cribbs began playing music at the age of five. He played instruments such as violin, piano, trombone, and drums. Early in his life he primarily was influenced by symphonic music and groups from the 60s such as Cat Stevens, the Beatles, and James Taylor. After finding his mother’s guitar in the attic he began exploring the world of Alternative Country and Americana. Bands such as Whiskytown, Uncle Tupelo, Ryan Adams, Wilco, Sonvolt, Richard Buckner and the Old 97s paralleled with Joni Mitchell, Ani DiFranco, Beth Hart, John Prine, and Taj Mahal. After recording an album entitled “35 Sound Start” in 2006 the press, almost immediately, sold out. His newest album “Marionette” has been getting rave reviews from the media. Neil performs his haunting and moving yet distinctly Southern songs using the traveling troubadour’s tools of choice: an acoustic guitar, a harmonica, and his soulful voice.”
